Judging by the number of search engine results produced when looking for Alternative Healing in Hong Kong, it is clear that there are many clinics and individuals such as myself offering these services in the territory; as well as people wishing to have such treatments Absolutely nothing surprising about that, you might say to yourself. In the past 25 years or so, general awareness and understanding of health and wellness has greatly increased, which Reiki and other mainstream healing modalities have benefitted from internationally.
Traditional Chinese medicine forms an integral part of daily life in Hong Kong. How many headaches and unwanted dizzy spells would have gone untreated without the liberal application of some strong-smelling embrocation or liniment to ease symptoms? Likewise ailments of the digestive tract or muscular strain. For more dynamic interventions, one only has to visit a reflexology establishment to effectively, albeit sometimes painfully, have the undersides of your feet pummeled into submission, or overcome a fear of needles through a session of acupuncture.

Reiki, therefore, fits well into the existent landscape of alternative treatment available in Hong Kong, being non-invasive, painless and of proven effectiveness, in spite of having been "discovered", or devised a little over one hundred years ago. There does not appear to be a record of when Reiki arrived in the SAR, but an educated assumption based on global trends would suggest some time in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Hong Kong's geographical and to an extent, cultural proximity, to Japan, might bring to light a date earlier than this, although pinning down a firm date without evidence would be mere supposition.
In common with other traditional Japanese endeavours from Kendo at one end to the quiet gentility of the tea ceremony, at the other, Reiki has a clearly defined structure. The skills required at a certain level must be attained before acceding to a higher grade. In the Usui tradition of Reiki there are 4 levels, Master being the highest grade.
Hong Kong, as we residents know, is driven, happily chaotic and discombobulating at times, Reiki can be viewed in practical terms, as a tool, rather like a massage or a relaxing cup of tea, to calm and slow everything down. Besides the fundamental hands-on healing aspect of Reiki, as you progress upwards through the Reiki levels, the abilities that you attain develop, become stronger and can be employed and incorporated in everyday life with the minimum of effort. Additionally, there are no barriers in Reiki, it is safe and can be used on any one at any age, pets, plants, food, the list goes on.

We all have apps on our mobile phones, viewed through this prism, Reiki can be seen as an app, that, like your mobile is with you all hours of the day, but which unlike the hand-held device, does not need recharging as and when. Reiki has in fact been proven to extend battery life by half an hour, handy when you are late for your acupuncture appointment!
