Reiki's Relationship With Other Healing Modalities

Reiki, although one of the more well-known healing modalities, and, in the historical context, one of the newest, the energy first having been accessed a little over a hundred years ago, is part of a family of such healing methods, some of whose origins stretch back thousands of years.

The great ancient civilizations such as the Greek and the Egyptian built up a vast stock of medical knowledge, as we know, much medical terminology in modern day English is derived from Greek roots. Intrinsic to their approach to the well-being of the body was energy healing.

The Greeks held that the emotional immersion into a theatrical production was a form of healing for the collective audience.

A more tailored, individualized healing experience could be achieved by going into the forests. The Greeks understood that, like humans, plants and vegetation are alive and sentient. As such, hermits, herbalists and others with an understanding of the beneficial qualities of what grew around them, were able to treat, or at the very least, alleviate, the symptoms of a particular complaint or ailment.

Another facet of this healing included the use of wood, dissipate negative energy, particularly, the use of wild wood as it grew of its own accord rather than being planted with intention by man. It was thought that such knowledge, with the arrival of Christianity had been lost, but there are still those in Greece today who retain, use and pass on this information to future generations.

Sekhem is the healing modality employed by the Egyptians since ancient times. The energy for this particular form of healing was said to be originally obtained from the Sirius constellation, after which it was used in the civilizations of Atlantis and Lemuria before then being passed on to the Egyptians. It is said that Sekhem healing works on a higher vibration than that of Reiki. Do not be mistaken for thinking is is therefore somehow "better" as a result, they just are different from one another.

Close parallels can be drawn between the Greek, the Egyptian and the Japanese forms of energy healing. For example, one of the first methods that students learn in Reiki is the ability to give and receive energy from the environment, specifically plants and trees. I don't know whether this is where the term "tree hugger" originated as it is not necessary to do so! Which as we saw, is an important element of Greek healing.

Likewise, there are similarities between Reiki and Sekhem. One school of thought holds that before being "discovered" in 1922, Reiki, or the energy of Reiki, since it was yet to acquire that name, originated in Atlantis and Lemuria as Sekhem had done.

There are many more healing modalities out there, but discussing them would fall outside the constraints, and, perhaps the attention span of you the reader of this article. There will, however, be many more comparisons, discussions and analysis of Reiki and hands-on healing, generally in upcoming articles.
